More About Village Square

Village Square is an online community information directory established July 4th, 1996. It's hosted as a public service by Hinsdale resident and marketing/technology consultant Allen Armstrong. Village Square may also rely on the support of local sponsors to help defray the cost of making this a premier local community website.

Our mission is to help foster community interaction and cohesion within the midst of an international online world. We attempt to achieve this by harnessing the power of the many materials available on the Web and tailoring them for local-interest purposes. Throughout Village Square you'll find that the hotlinks to well-known web databases, search engines and content sites may have been modified to produce more localized results. Of course, you can always substitute the standard parameters available at each site to widen or customize your own results.

Village Square is based on content and convenience, not the latest fancy HTML gimmicks. Our site is designed to help all our online friends find information of local interest quickly, no matter what browser or connection speed you use.

Since the content of the Web is always changing, the development and maintenance of this site is most certainly a dynamic, ongoing process. To help us grow and stay current, we welcome your email suggestions on improvements you'd like to see. While we cannot always promise a quick response on our cost-conscious budget, we do appreciate your input and will strive to be as responsive as possible.

Post your information on Village Square

As a local information service, we want to add links to as much information as possible about local businesses, organizations, and websites of local interest. Information of general interest will be posted free of charge, however it must be provided to us in electronic form (sorry, we don't have the time to key it in). The preferred method is through an email to us at this address. The alternate method is information that's saved as generic ASCII text and delivered on a PC-formatted diskette (no Mac-format, please).

After delivery in either above format, we'll convert your text to HTML format for viewing in a basic Web page and place a link to your information in our directory. If you'd like to design your own HTML page for your information, (and there are many HTML editors that make this relatively easy,) you may deliver the finished HTML to us and we will post your page as you've designed it, assuming there are no bugs that we cannot clean up.

IMPORTANT!

Please keep in mind we are not here to be a free advertising service. We welcome sponsors in the support of our efforts, and if the material you submit is deemed to be more than just information of general interest, (this is a gray area I know, and our decision is final,) we will be obligated to charge a nominal fee for posting it. Please see our current rate card for posting rates. If you already have a commercial website hosted elsewhere however, we will be happy to provide a free link to it from one or more appropriate pages within Village Square if you advise us of your site's URL and content.

Create your own family's homepage

Part of our Family & Home square is a local family homepage directory. This is a list of hotlinks to non-commercial websites set up by local families and individuals. If you do not already have a web service that will host your family's homepage site, we can post your webpages and assign you a Village Square URL (address) that will display them. Please see our rate card for the very nominal charges for this service.
